Create a Family Tree in Google Docs – Step-by-Step Guide

You do not need complicated tools to create your own family tree. You can use simple word processor apps like Google Docs to create a family tree diagram or chart.

Step 1: Download a Family Tree Template

The first step is to download a family tree template so you can customize it. It is better to use a ready-made template if you want to save time and energy. 

Step 2: Select Google Docs File Format

You will find different file formats available to download. The next step is to choose Google Docs as the file format.   

Step 3:  Open the Template in Google Docs

You can only access and edit documents in Google Docs with a Gmail account. Once you have downloaded the template to your device, open the file in Google Docs.  

Step 4: Create a Title

You can change the title of the family tree template to anything you want. Afterall, it is your personal family project. As much as possible, keep the title short and simple. 

Step 5: Customize the Images

The template is designed for kids, so there are several cartoon graphics that would appeal to children. You can adjust the graphics by selecting it and clicking Image Options or if not, you can simply remove the graphics if you so want. 

Step 6: Insert Names of Family Members

For each generation, provide the name of each family member. If you do not know the name of your other relatives, this could be the opportunity for you to go out and touch base with them.

Step 7: Provide Labels

Once you have provided the names of your family members, identify their role or assign them labels in relation to you. For example, if you are the second-born child in your nuclear family, identify each one in the family tree as either a parent, sibling, grandparent, uncle, aunt, etc. 

Step 8:  Customize the Family Tree Design 

This step is optional, but if you want to add or change the colors in the template, simply select an element and open the Drawing window. To open the Drawing window, select an element then click the Edit function or pencil icon.  

Step 9: Print or Share the File

After editing and reviewing the names in your family tree for accuracy, you can either download, share, or print the document. Go to the File tab and select Print from the menu to customize the print settings. You can also export the file in PDF or Word format if you want.
