All about Trees
A tree is a perennial plant with an lengthened stem or trunk, supporting branches and leaves in most species. In some usages, the meaning of a tree may be constrictive, including only woody plants with secondary growth, plants that are usable as lumber, or plants above a specified height.
Tree Parts
Trees are not a taxonomic category but involve an array of plant species that have evolved freely a woody trunk and branches as a way to tower above other plants to battle with sunlight. Trees have been in existence for 370 million years. It is approximated that there are just over 3 trillion mature trees worldwide.
Here are the most important parts that make up a tree:
- Roots. Serve to anchor tree to the ground and gather water and nutrients to transfer to all parts of the tree. Also used for reproduction, defense, survival, energy storage, and many other purposes.
- Trunk. To raise the leaves above the ground, enabling the tree to reach the light and survive. Also performs the task of transporting water and nutrients from the roots to the aerial parts of the tree.
- Buds. Thick, small, and closely wrapped and enclose the growing point in a waterproof covering. Inside this bud is a basic stalk and neatly folded miniature leaves, ready to grow when the next growing season comes.
- Leaves. Structures specialized for photosynthesis and are arranged on the tree in such a way as to boost their exposure to light without shading each other.

Tree benefits
- Food. Trees are the great source of many of the world’s famous fleshy fruits such as apples, pears, plums, cherries, and citrus. All are grown commercially in temperate climates; however, a wide range of edible fruits are found in the tropics.
- Ornamental. Can create a visual impact similar way as other landscape features and give a sense of maturity and calmness to parks and gardens.
- Provide oxygen. An acre of trees can give enough oxygen for 20 people.
- Cleans the air. Trees absorb pollutant gasses such as nitrogen oxides, ammonia, sulfur dioxide, and ozone. They also filter particulates by trapping them on their leaves.
- Saves water. Shade from trees slower water evaporation from lawns. As trees develop, they increase atmospheric moisture.
Now you have an added information about trees. As much as possible we need to do our best to take good care of them. Like us, they are living things too.
