What Is a Layout?
A layout is an element in graphic design which is used for a page. It deals with the arrangements of its contents such as its visual aspects and details. It basically involves the organization of the the page’s composition and where the specific details should be placed within the page. This includes the body copy, colors, headlines, illustrations or images, scales, and many more. The appearance of the page and its contents should be in relation with each other to achieve a smooth flow of information and to create a visual impact upon the reader.
This is particularly helpful with its readers if the contents include images. Without a proper layout, the readers may get confused with the contents and do not know where to read next or may not understand what they are reading. With proper layout, a book can be easily navigated. Within its pages, the photos and contents can be understood with ease, thus making the reader browse through efficiently.

- The front matter, such as title pages and everything relevant to the first page, should be in roman numeral page numbers.
- Blank pages should not be numbered.
- When you’re choosing your interior font, your words should be legible.
- Most formatted contents use justified column text for the body paragraphs.
- If you have a long author biography, your “About the Author” section generally should be placed in the very back of the book.
- Margins for business and other non-fiction types of books often have wide margins so that readers can make notes to read.
- Headings and subheadings are important so that readers can navigate through chapters easily.
